The icon space that a link takes up in a toolbar is space-consuming, especially if it is a bookmark. The desktop, on the other hand, has acres of room that can always be temporarily obscured by one or more open windows.

For example, I currently have 48 icon links on my desktop, which take up just over 21% of the total available space. Even ten of those links would overcrowd any single toolbar.

Toolbars are S&EL, and should be shunned whenever possible.

Here's a tip for managing that, if you choose.
Right click on the desktop and select 'new > folder.'
For example, create a folder called GAMES. Then you
can drag and drop all your game desktop links into
the GAMES folder and open it when you want
to click up a game.

Thanks for the tip! Since I use Linux with the KDE4, I had to check that it would work with that set-up. It does. Since I have already grouped my desktop icons according to subject-group, this will simplify things down to about a dozen or so folders. :)

When I spoke of toolbars, I was referring specifically to toolbars within Firefox, Opera or Konqueror (I use all three). But all toolbars are S&EL, anyway.

Groups are great for organizing anything, including tool bars and links.

I have 18 links on my primary toolbar and I could probably squeeze that to 24 without difficulty.

And I seem to have one superfluous tool bar that I can't get rid of ...
