The merchants around the military bases whined about service members not shopping downtown because the prices were better on base(s) plus no tax.

IIRC, they successfully lobbied to have military exchanges/gas prices and commissary pricing to be within 10% of the local retail costs of goods.

Other than food I don't buy anything on bases any more...can beat it downtown.

Well, let us hope that in the evening of Nov 6 2012 we will have a reason to get joyously drunk. Like on Purim- when every Jew is supposed to get so drunk as not to be able to tell Haman from Mordechai. Unless some civil disturbances interfere, of course. But then, if the target seems double, shoot in between them.
