From imdb.com...

James Garner, Born: James Scott Bumgarner
April 7, 1928 in Norman, Oklahoma, USA

The son of an Oklahoma carpet layer, James Garner (born James Bumgarner) dropped out of high school at 16 to join the Merchant Marine. He worked in a variety of jobs and received the Purple Heart when he was wounded during the Korean War. He had his first chance to act when a friend got him a non-speaking role in the Broadway stage play "The Caine Mutiny Court Martial (1954)"... See full bio »

One of my favorite scenes of his is when the sheriff takes 10 guns off of him before the big poker game:

No, it is the episode of "Maverick" where Garner (Bret) kept saying through the whole episode "I'm workin' on it" and Jack Kelly (Bart) did all the work. At the end Bret took all the credit.

That series was great!

And I used to live in Malibu and would eat at the Sandcastle (called the Sandbox in "The Rockford Files") pretty often. It is a very good restaurant and the location in Paradise Cove is fantastic (one of the things I miss about L.A.). You could see the spot where his trailer was supposed to be...

One of my favorite lines in the movies wasn't from Garner, but a movie he starred in. I think it was "Support you local sheriff" where one of the bad guys says of his bad-guy father, "He's got a heart as big as the whole outdoors but he don't have one brain in his poor old head."

And that was the fellow who was intimidated by red paint on the floor.

Too bad he's such a big Dem. With Garner, Bill Moyers and Liz Warren having all moved out of Oklahoma, there went half the liberals in the state.
