Given JR's stentorian opposition to the Republican nominee and the only remaining alternative to Obama, your notion of a fist hitting back doesn't work too well.

I still read FR but almost never post. I see there are quite a few there who want Romney to lose to teach The EstablishmentTM a lesson.

Me also. Nor do I often read the posts, even.
Is JR going to back a third part this time?

On or off the web, I have never seen a more eclectic, fun, smart, funny, group of people ever. I could not wait to log in to see what was going on. We gave a damn about each other feelings (almost no flame wars – pretty much unheard-of on the web), liked each other, and generally made it a home away from home.
Queue to today: I see lots of “fuck you”, troll, and many other uncivil exchanges. We lost something along the way. Not exactly sure why, but the DC of old is fading fast.
I think the economy, war, home-life (many have had a rough go of it as of late), the unbelievably nasty primaries, medical issues, etc. have taken their toll and it spilled over on to DC. We even lost a treasured member due to his passing away. He would log in from his hospital bed in horrible pain and unable to even speak yet he never once complained on the site. DC was a haven from the pain and torments of living. If DC fails as a site tomorrow at least that one thing would have made it all worth it.
These days; instead of “I can’t wait” it is now “I dread what I am going to see this time” every time I log in.
My fondest wish (even more than me being out of pain which has now become 24/7) is that we can turn the clock back. But it is up to all of you to acomplish such.
Just Rades two cents.

much as I'd prefer amity and dignity to reign unchallenged, I don't believe it is possible.
Once a group becomes large enough, there will be members who hold views which are extreme (for the group distribution).
Once those views are aired enough times, there will be a history and context. Any successive airing of those views will not exist independent of that history. People will stop discussing the post and will instead row on the history. People will cease posting as individuals and will instead become the mouthpieces of the view-history they support or of the opposition to the view-history they despise.
this is inevitable.
Amity cannot reign unchallenged.
However, perhaps *dignity* can be preserved.

Would not work. You would also have to ban all hints and allusions - and there are millenia-old techniques for using these [perfected in Confucian China, among other places]. Remember, the beauty is in the eye of beholder, and that could always be used to advantage.gcruse wrote:sirkitfixer wrote:There was always a simple fix. Ban the use of the word "you". And adjectives. Get rid of adjectives.
Absolutely correct. Observe the decorum. Everyone should be wearing top hats and gloves [if only because slapping faces with gloves could be more picturesque]. No more simple name-calling, but always preface it with "sir, you are a..." ... and then insert the expletive. Observing the proper form is everything. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristophanes :kingprout wrote:However, perhaps *dignity* can be preserved.
Old Comedy is rich in obscenities and the crude jokes are often very detailed, as when the Chorus in The Acharnians places a curse on Antimachus,[125] a choregus accused of niggardly conduct, wishing upon him a night-time mugging as he returns home from some drunken party and envisioning him, as he stoops down to pick up a rock in the darkness, accidentally picking up a fresh turd instead. He is then envisioned hurling the turd at his attacker, missing and accidentally hitting Cratinus, a lyric poet not admired by Aristophanes.[126] This was particularly funny because the curse was sung (or chanted) in choreographed style by a Chorus of 24 grown men who were otherwise known to the audience as respectable citizens.
