San Francisco bans Happy Meals

San Francisco's board of supervisors has voted, by a veto-proof margin, to ban most of McDonald's Happy Meals as they are now served in the restaurants.

The measure will make San Francisco the first major city in the country to forbid restaurants from offering a free toy with meals that contain more than set levels of calories, sugar and fat.

...

"We're part of a movement that is moving forward an agenda of food justice," said Supervisor Eric Mar, who sponsored the measure. "From San Francisco to New York City, the epidemic of childhood obesity in this country is making our kids sick, particularly kids from low income neighborhoods, at an alarming rate. It's a survival issue and a day-to-day issue."

we should just ban San Francisco a much simpler solution to the problem :)

These idiots are banning plastic bags too. They say they are all over the place (I don't see them).
I have a solution. Pay the bums that normally sleep on the lawn of city hall to pick up the bags. Two problems solved!

The bums had to stink up the library today as the Giants had their WS rally at Civic Center, where the lawn is.

I understand you're pretty pissed about this, and I agree. But some good can come of this. Conservative bloggers and commentators can point out that this is the true agenda of the left. It needs to get wide publicity.

I wonder if it was just a coincidence that the Crappy Meal was included in this. Did they have to word the law in a way as not to make it look like a targeted hit?

I actually think we all need to concentrate on California. Come January, it will be all blue in Sacramento and the things they will come up with will be really stupid, but they will also be the harbingers of what will happen to the whole country if we can't turn it around.

They will be coming around with their hands out. Eff them baboons as Senor Slob says.

I heard they are required to have fruits in them. Or serving them. I can't remember which.

How about McD coming up with a non-fun Lefty Meal for such places? The box, etc., could have a bunch of lefty stuff printed on it.

"Your consumption of this meal is bad for Gaia."
"Why do you hate our Mother Earth so much?"
"Your parents are bad for letting you eat this."
"Next time have some tofu and arugula."

Mayor McCheese would be portrayed as a fascist. The Hamburglar would be a People's Hero, liberating excess profits from the cash register. Ronald would be an Evil Clown. Instead of sponsoring Ronald McDonald House Charities, there would be donation boxes to support abortion clinics and the ACLU.

My silly comment aside, doesn't McDonalds have a good case here with the feds?
Isn't the Crappy Meal covered under interstate commerce?

Of all the ways the scuzzy SCOTUS and congress abuse that clause, this would seem to fit in realistically.
Maybe I am reading it wrong, so maybe someone can clear this up.

Screw that, McDonald's should replace the "Happy Meal" in its San Francisco restaurants with an "Unhappy Meal", containing a bland veggie patty on a tofu bun with a side of celery sticks. It would come in a 100% recycled paper bag emblazoned with the cheery slogan, "This is what happens when your parents vote for Democrats, kids!"

Pretty much everything is covered under the commerce clause, which permits the fed to regulate, but does NOT automatically preempt local regulation.

They are absolutely counting on getting bailed out. The recently passed sham budget (which was due July 1) includes several billion federal bailout dollars as expected revenue. From what I've been reading, it's highly unlikely that it will be forthcoming. Yes, point to California as what other states can expect to happen if the statist agendas are allowed to advance elsewhere.

The pubs in the house better stand firm on this.

happy meal with cheeseburger and small fries is 530 cals, assuming the kid gets a diet soda. i doubt many restaurants can beat that number, toy or not.

kids like cheeseburgers. each kid will have to learn to meter their own cheeseburger intake, just as i did. a law isn't going to help much.

hmm... bet you can make a good living of selling "happy meal" lunches consisting of tofu blocks to kids in SF

the toy would be something like a crayon with organic natural dye colors, or a henna sticker tattoo, or something

Food justice?

Well, there's also "electoral justice" and the ads just write themselves:

"Supervisor Eric Mar, sponsor of the Unhappy Meal legislation -- a man so nuts he voted to ban children's toys..."

So don't call it a "Happy Meal" anymore, but a "Children's Meal," and have a bowl with the standard toys on the counter. Kids get to pick one. Just un-package it, and keep selling it.

Mantrate 'em.
