Sunday night, Penn State annnounced athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz have stepped down amid allegations of an explosive child-sex abuse scandal and cover-up.
And while the pair will not survive the scandal, it is believed Penn State football icon Joe Paterno probably adhered to the letter of the law when he told the school’s athletic director - but not the police - that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky allegedly sexually abused a boy in the Nittany Lions’ locker room in 2002.
But attorneys familiar with child abuse statutes say that while the venerable college coach may not face criminal charges, he is hardly an innocent bystander. ...

Which is the grossest error, and doubly so for the research universities. Recite The Mantratm, and close the athletics program.RaccoonRevolution wrote:GSlob wrote:And why is there such a beast as an athletic director? A university is there to train cognitive types, and not baboons and gorillas.
Universities, at least here, are primarily for athletics, and the money they bring in, and secondarily for academics.

With the money now going into that football I would try to hire a couple of good nobeliates [or up-and-coming ones] instead . And these [unless the spent coasters] bring with them a lot - money/grants, PR/recognition, people [bright postdocs]. The absolutely last thing I would want to see on any campus are the anacephalic jocks and everything connected with such. Is MIT known for its athletics?gcruse wrote:GSlob wrote:Well, were it up to me, he would not be. I'm just guessing here that the football program brings more money into Rutgers than all the others combined. Woodsman, spare that golden goose.

Serious cognitive activities are possible even in New Jersey. IIRC, Princeton is still there. But the thrust remains: strive to become another MIT, and tell the jocks to go and fuck themselves - somewhere else.gcruse wrote:GSlob wrote:With the money now going into that football I would try to hire a couple of good nobeliates [or up-and-coming ones] instead . For college-football fans, Penn State’s Coach Joe Paterno was a great man. But his failure to bring a rapist [Jerry Sandusky] to justice has ruined his reputation for good, argues Michael Tomasky.

Yeah. From what I gather, it was a graduate assistant who didn't tell anyone because he was afraid he'd lose his job.

Joe Paterno has decided to retire as Pennsylvania State University's football coach at the end of the season, in the wake of a child-sex-abuse scandal involving his former longtime assistant coach. Mr. Paterno confirmed his departure in a statement released by the school.
"I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can," he said in the statement.

Well, what was he supposed to do? To take the matters in his own hands? To report it? - and report it he did, upstairs inside his organization. His unwillingness to get himself involved more than was necessary is entirely understandable. He passed the buck of dealing with the law enforcement, public relations mess, etc. to the others whose job it was to deal with these.

Since JoePa didn't witness the act, he was, at best, reporting on gossip, --a rumor.

Penn State University President Graham Spanier will either resign or be voted out by the end of today, a source close to the board of trustees told The Express-Times.
An interim president, most likely Executive Vice President and Provost Rodney A. Erickson, will be appointed and a nationwide search for a permanent replacement will begin, according to the source who requested anonymity.
Spanier was made aware in 2002 that a graduate assistant coach had seen former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky allegedly sexually assault a young boy in a shower in the Penn State locker room, according to grand jury testimony. Spanier did not involve police, according to testimony. ...
